Husband offers niece her wife's piano without first consulting with her if she wants to give it up, now sister-in-law wants her to pay the $300 fee for the movers: '[Wife said] that if [SIL] wants it for her daughter it’s $1,400, and take the $300'

On Saturday morning 2 guys from a moving company knocked on our door to pick up my piano. That was the first I'd heard of anybody picking up MY piano. They had a work order with my sister-in-law's name and our address on it. My husband was at his brother's house helping him put up a fence all morning so I just stood out on the porch in my socks with the movers waiting by their truck and

called him to ask what in the world was going on. His sister's daughter started lessons in September and has been practicing on a little keyboard, and apparently he'd promised his sister the piano because I "haven't touched it since we got the house." He was going to tell me Friday night and forgot. It's an upright my parents bought me when I was 12. There's a long scratch down one side from when

my brother tried to skateboard through our living room in high school, I don't know why that's the first thing I think about when I look at it. I don't play it much anymore, mostly at Christmas when my mom makes everybody sing. As soon as I said it wasn't going anywhere he went "fine, then you explain it to her" and hung up, so I went back out and sent the movers away. Sunday my SIL texted me the

receipt. It was $300, which is their minimum even if nothing gets moved, and under it she wrote "since you sent them away I think this one's on you." I looked up what used uprights like mine go for around here and texted her back that if she wants it for her daughter it's $1,400, and I'd take the $300 off so she isn't out anything for the movers. I meant that too. If it's going anywhere I'd rather it be my

niece. She left that on read. My husband has been pretty quiet since Saturday and the piano's sitting right where it's been the whole time.

hedwigflysagain NTA, time to rehome your husband's dearest possession now. He is the real villain in this story.

Pale-Experience-2409 Your husband promised away a piano he doesnt own and forgot to mention it. Then he hung up so that saying no to his sister would be your job instead of his. Hes been quiet since Saturday because theres no version of it he can say out loud that sounds alright.

annetoanne This is between your husband and his sister. Tell her to take it up with him because he's too much of a coward to tackle this issue himself.

Life_Temperature2506 NTA, but the real villain here is your husband. But this fascinates me: I recently saw something, somewhere (maybe Reddit?) that suggested you can't even GIVE pianos away nowadays. Can't even donate them, unless YOU pay and arrange transporation, and even then finding a place that will accept them (like a school) is difficult.

Talkie Tina "(SIL's name), Hubby offered to give you the piano but never asked me. It wasn't his to offer. I was flabbergasted to have my door pounded on Saturday morning by movers trying to take it. It has sentimental value to me and I don't want to part with it. If the shoe were on the other foot, you'd probably be livid. I'm not but I am not going to give up my piano when I want to keep it, especially since no one told me about it beforehand. I tried to offer it to you

strictly to come up with some sort of solution, but I've decided against that now, especially when you didn't bother to reply to the offer. Under the circumstances, I'll not only be keeping my piano, but am not responsible for paying for movers that I didn't contract with. Any further communications about this should be directed to hubby. I had nothing to do with any of this and knew nothing beforehand." If SIL and hubby want the situation to get weird, that's on them. You did nothing

kindofanasshole17 The only AH here is your husband. SIL is ped that she wasted $300 hiring movers, based on a promise your idiot husband made and was unable to keep. I don't really blame her.

NYC-WhWmn-ov50 Not your problem. Hubby tried to give away something that doesnt belong to him and he has no right to give away, SIL should have checked with the OWNER before booking an expensive service. tell both hubby and ais that they can sort it out between them but YOUR piano is not for sale at any price and you dont owe anyone the cost for their attempted (failed) THEFT OF PROPERTY. Your husband needs to apologize to both of you since he had no toght to yhe puano

and was the one who didnt bother to tell you before his sister wasted her money bexause of him. If he doesnt want to apologize he can go stay with his sister for a while. But put a tracker in your piano and take plenty of pictures just in case it 'goes missing'.

cassowary32 ?? He Is your husband okay because promised something that wasn't his then left you to deal with it, then the sister tried to bill you for refusing her attempt to steal your property? What is going on in that family?
